It's been one month. I have been asking myself the same question. Again and again. For Thirty days.
Habit? Or something else?
Every encounter either make me feel happy for one whole day, or down for one whole day. It is my failure in controlling my emotion, or maybe I am trying to control something which is impossible to contain anyway? Like wild fire spreading and burning, just this one has unlimited fuel which constantly get refreshed again and again.
Am I hoping that the fire will go out eventually like the forest fire in Australia last time? Uncontrollable at that time, yes, but still go out after some time?
No, it does not seemed that way. Not even after one month, anyway.
I wait. I watch. I be patient.
I frust. I miss. I stress.
It's one big dose of damnation and blessing at the same time. It shows me how I am a guy who make others my center of life. It shows me how stubborn I could be in such matter. And yet with all that obstacles and seemingly impossible path, I choose to suffer, I rather suffer. Because I know there's a chance.
If I fail, it will still worth it. Because it's even more not worth it if I missed a chance to pursue something I want. And I know how badly I yearn for that one.

Zooming in
When I was small, when I was in secondary school there's always some elders you will meet in your life who wants to teach you about what life is. They told me how I should be spending my life. They give me an analysis of which career is most suitable. They even told me what my ideal wife should look like and act like. The way they say it, you will feel that these things define your future, that the whole life of yours actually depends on your choices.
But when I grow older, I read more and I think more, I can't really agree to all this anymore. I don't think that our life's meaning depends on these general things. I feel that even if one has a good career, good wife and what people call supposedly "perfect life" you can still live like a zombie without any feeling.
While it's true that what you choose and what you do do define you as a person in whole, I think that we should zoom in further. For all we know, two person can have the same objective and the same way of doing it, maybe even equal ability. But do they gain the same results? I doubt that any two person will be completely equal in anything. Then what's wrong? What creates the difference?
It's the small things that people normally take them as unimportant that makes the difference. It's the small difference in the way you think that cause you to succeed or lose. No matter how you look at the big picture, you will eventually find that it's the small, detailed parts of the picture which make it so wonderful and so fascinating. No matter how good you are, you still need to assemble the basic elements to get the complete set of the thing you want.
It's like during the process of chasing a girl, people normally pay attention to the part where the boy confesses and the girl accepts or maybe the part where the boy flirts with the girl. But every boy flirts with the girl they are chasing, so what's so interesting with it? The part which defines the thing lies in the smallest movement, the simplest dialogue or maybe the basic feeling the boy is giving out to the people around him. Have you ever compare two pairs of couples flirting? Then maybe you will get to notice such small differences. How the tiniest, non-obvious and maybe even without the doer's realization himself or herself make every case unique.
When we continue to grow and learn more, we will eventually leave the level where we are looking at the big picture and learning the steps. We will slowly start to notice the tiniest things in our action. It's just like chess. When you become really good, it's one small difference that change everything in a game. The ones who fail to zoom in will always live in the world which the big picture is everything, and without really going deeper into anything, fail to find the true meaning of their actions. How can a basketball game become really meaningful for a player if he only play the game based on principles of the game? Of course he's going deeper and deeper both in emotional aspect and technical aspect, which will be unique compared to other players although everyone plays the same game.
For me myself, I am currently training hard to improve myself in debating skills. But the more I learn, the more tiny elements begin to pop out. I realize that achieving the basics is one thing, but if I were to evolve to become better and a true debater, I need to really zoom in and deal with those tiny elements. After all, what defines professionalism and uniqueness come from them.
The longer I wait and be patient for something that my heart yearns so much, the better I understand about myself also. I just hope by zooming in, I will be become better and redefine myself in a new light.
Because to really create a change, I need to zoom in. Because that's how I will know what I need to change, what I need to improve and what move I need to take in order to reach my target in the end.

A Stranger's Sincerity
We may have heard this saying many times: It's pity not to have friends. It may be correct, but sometimes in life you may find that strangers you meet actually may bring you help you do not expect and in some case, far more valuable than things your friends can give you.
The most distinctive difference between strangers and friends are how much you know about them. You may know someone for ten years, but if you don't know anything about that person and he don't know about you either, then you can consider him as a stranger. In contrary, even if you just met someone for one day but you and that person manage to know each other very well, then he or she can be considered as your friend.
For each and everyone of us, we can have one zillion friends but our closest friends will most probably be like only a handful. When you have trouble, real trouble not simple everyday problem, the people who can help you and who most probably will help you are these closest friends. But the thing is, even closest friends become not so close after being separated for a while. You may trust one person very much, but after three years you guys don't meet and he suddenly turn up with a serious request, will you still trust him like before? I doubt that. Another thing is closest friends have their own life to live too, which means they will be there for you all the time. Even if they are willing to fly back from a zillion miles away to rescue you, I doubt whether you will be thick-faced enough to ask them to do that.
For strangers, they don't you and you don't know them, so of course you can't expect them to do some stunts to save you or help you. But if one stranger were to help you when you are in trouble, it means he or she is helping you with a pure heart. Of course this does not include people who help you to gain your money or things. The thing is, when a friend helps you, does he helps because he wants to help you, or because you are his friend? Will he still help you if you were stranger to him? Does he feel that helping a friend is his responsibility or a good deed he would have done to anyone? Try to think about that.
Maybe we can agree that some people are like that. But we must also know that between friends exist several bonds which does not form between strangers, mostly anyway. When you treat a friend bad, or when you refuse to help him on an occasion, what would happen the next time you are in trouble? Of course he's not going to help you, except he's a extremely kind people which is rare. Even if you argue that you help your friend truthfully, you cannot deny your mind will think and compare about how you and your friend treat each other. In there somewhere is the idea of gaining something, which although may only present in a tiny amount but will reduce the true sincerity of our heart.
But when we help someone we do not know, or when a stranger helps us, it's different. Why? Because you do not expect to gain something from a stranger who you meet because of coincidence. You may meet that someone today and never again in the future. Your life will hardly be affected by that stranger again. But yet you help them, or you get help from them. In such cases, the sincerity is even more purer than helping between your friends and you.
One of my friends said that she can confess about her thoughts to a stranger better than a friend. Because a stranger just appear for a brief moment and they go away, so she does not face problem facing them in the future. And when a stranger listen to you, he or she is not listening because they are afraid to offend you. They don't care anyway because you won't be one big piece in their life, you are just one people they meet and leave. When they listen is because they want to and they care.
In short, in life we will always have to face our friends, so it will be a long term relationship with them, at least many times longer compared to the ones we have with strangers. To maintain a relationship includes too many complex things which will clash with our sincerity, like balancing gaining and giving between friends. For strangers whom we may only meet for once in our life, there's no complex element in the short term relationship. We treat them as we wish to, and they treat us like they wish to, filled with sincerity. That's why when they help or they care, the heart behind this action may be much much purer than a friend's.
That's why don't be shocked that at some point in life, you may get deeply touched by a stranger's sincerity. =)

When my mind run wild
People always say that they want a quiet environment to feel peaceful. But at most times it's a quiet environment that makes your mind wonder more wildly. This can be explained using the theory of relativity, where similarly tell us that beauty only exist because of ugly, happiness only exist because of sadness and wisdom only exist only because stupidity.
The same thing goes for our mind. We have a lot of problems in life. The time when we are really at peace is actually the things around us are in chaos. Sounds like nonsense? Not at all. When we are in a very grave condition, our mind focuses on the thing around us. We don't have many thoughts because our mind are working hard at the moment to face the current situation. But notice this: whenever we sat down and have nothing to do, or the fact that the things you are doing is not too important that it won't form a strong enough attraction for your mind, you end up thinking about a lot more things than you do during chaos. You think about your future, your desires or even sometimes flashes of thoughts which bring no meaning but still annoying all the same.
The night is a time when you mind run wilder than the rest of the time in a day. Sometimes you can't sleep, like I am now, and you find yourself sitting in front of your laptop reading people's posts on facebook without really taking in what they're posting. Your mind's running wild with all the problems you face recently and you don't really want to disturb your friends who is online at that moment. Or worse there's some problem you can't simply talk to anyone about but you wonder whether trying to access the problem or the person directly will make the situations better or worse.
You think about all the possibilities. You think about the moves you should take. You think about other live examples you have witnessed in your life. You think about whether it's worth it. Then you can't stop thinking about it anyway. All that can haunt you during the time which is the most peaceful. Because the peace outside actually helps to let you know how much trouble you have inside.
Wise people says that a kind heart recognizes no enemy, wisdom recognizes no worry. But if I were a wise person then surely I will either solve it without trouble or won't bother to feel worry.
But in this depth of night, my heart's yearning is even clearer and louder, like a giant bell sounded in silence. The missing I have sounds like thunder in my mind, hoping that someone would hear it.
Run wild! Run free! Carry my thoughts and care like a slow, cool breeze. Into the dream of it's master who is always missed. Go!
Midnight, that's when my mind run wild.

Something to be done
There's always time you have to do something. Sometimes it's the people around you who forces you to do it, sometimes it's the surrounding that forces you and sometimes it's you who forces you to do it yourself. They can be things you don't like, things you find annoying and exhausting or things that requires a long and continuous effort which you don't really feel up to the challenge. Nevertheless, sometimes they are something that need to be done.
I read and heard from many times in all sorts of books and people I encounter in my life that it's things like that which make you stronger. It's things like that which make one's life meaningful. It's things like that which give you the ability to stand up again and again in difficult conditions. Even though if one know that he will fail, he still needs to try and give his best shot. If he do not, then he either feels regret or keep failing when facing similar situations in the future.
So what if you are facing tough competitions? So what if the chance to succeed is scarce? What if it requires you making lots of efforts? So what if it requires you to be patient and keep doing it for a long time? So what if after all that, you can still fail?
The fact is, chickening out just because you are afraid of losing or just prefer a easier path is pathetic! I don't deny that something can be achieved by trying different methods, like people say you have lots of ways to earn money. But if something is your passion, something you can't replace it, or something you only have one chance to get, then choosing not to try is choosing to be a coward.
If something were needed to be done, then do it before people around you start forcing you. If something were needed to be done, then do it before the environment start forcing you. If there's something you really want to do, then do it before the regret is stuck in your mind forever.
Because that's something to be done too.

Just Try, No Regrets
I am ashamed of having thoughts to give up before I even tried. It's just a flash, but it still should not appear nevertheless. Things are supposed to happen in some way, but if you don't try then they are only supposed to fail. Of course there are things which you may fail after giving it your best shot, but if it's important to you then you still need to try it!
How do you know what's important to you? The answer's actually very simple. Put yourself in a situation where you may lose something. If that's the thing you truly want, then surely you will feel the pain of loss. I don't mean the pain you experienced like you misplaced your money. The true pain of loss makes you uncomfortable all time long, it's like you are robbed of something really important to you. You may be resting, but the thought of missing something will come flowing in. You maybe busy, but still you will easily find things that will remind you of that particular thing, again and again!
That's why people say if you can't make up your mind, toss a coin. When the coin is being tossed into the air, you are actually conscious that you may get one choice or the other, so it also means you have chance to lose either of them. So our mind automatically compares the feeling of losing one of the thing to the other, and you will suddenly realize at that moment that which thing you dread losing the most. You will then get the answer regardless of what results the coin throw may be.
Even though you are completely sure that you want something, you are always able to turn on your back and ignore it. Every passion dies if left without any tending, and so does emotion and feeling. Sometimes we feel that something is very hard to achieve and we tell ourselves: never mind, I think I will just give up. The question will not be whether we will be able to give up or not, but whether we will regret this decision.
To me, cutting away our dreams and beliefs is similar to cutting away part of our soul. We dream of something, yet we stay apart from it. This will make us feel some part of us are missing in the future. We may never tell anyone, but the regret's still there although may differ in intensity.
That's why I believe one should just try if that's what his heart wants. Even if you fail, you won't regret. While one can choose more easier path, I still choose to try.
Because I don't want to regret not trying it now in the future.

One bad habit
I was told it is just a habit. I was told that it will fade after time if I just leave it. I was told I will think differently if I was to continue acting normally like last time.
Of course things fade if you stop trying, stop practicing and stop giving it attention. It may take weeks, or maybe years, or maybe more than that, but the thing's for sure is it will fade.
But how the hell do I have the chance to be normal again? The NORMAL which is defined by you all anyway. Being a stranger? I don't think so. Even I can ignore when I meet, or even purposely get of of the way, the heart inside me is under torture. It's screaming at me so loud that sometimes I wonder whether it will break.
And that's this: habit. Why on earth is a habit paining me like nothing else? I have been a video gamer since seven years old, and yet I don't feel such a withdrawal symptoms before. Every sight or word that could have been related to the habit make me suffocate, make me wanna scream out in agony.
Yet to preserve something I treasured I said it was just a habit. I told people that it's okay, I realized it now. It's just a habit, I will get over it, no big deal.
But it's not working either, it seems that I am still losing it all the same....
Sometimes I question myself whether this "habit" will worn out or when it will as excruciating pain penetrate my heart like a dagger.
Then I swallow my tears and tell myself: "No big deal, it's just a habit."
Although I know better.

Not people's fault
I just read a saying that I agree with wholeheartedly. "When you feel the sight of seeing someone is annoying, it is actually your mental state which is not good enough."
How many times have an argument or even fight started from people who does not see each other eye to eye? How many times have you just walk down the street, saw a fellow and felt annoyed by just the sight of him? How many times have people choose not to give chance because they feel that that person should be punished, since I don't like his looks?
In life, we are all hoping to live happily, but realize that living happily is not possible to achieve by living alone. Humans live in societies, and we have to mingle around others each day. How can we live happily when we always found dislike and hatred in each other? How can we live happily if we are always unhappy about other people?
In Buddha's teaching, the highest level state of mental one can reach is not to feel angry however way you are provoked. Although we cannot expect everyone to reach such level, at least we can stop making conclusions about other people based on first sight. However bad you feel about the person's outer image he is portraying, the true nature he has maybe completely different from what you think. Often we will find evil or kindness at the place we least expected it.
It won't be people's fault if we feel annoyed by their appearance. It won't be your surrounding's fault if you feel that the place make you moody and sad. Human wants to be the controller and regulator in many things, but often they forget that the true controller is the one who can control his mind. A positive mind views everything in a positive light, which further encouraged innovative actions which yield good results. How can we blame people around us to be the source of our failures?
The next time you feel annoyed by sights of people you dislike, think of your own faults and confront your own mind. Is this feeling of annoyance people's fault?
No, it is actually a defect of your own mental state. So don't feel unhappy then! =D

Live on! Game on!
There's one dialogue which I remember very well from a drama which I watched not long ago: "Whatever happen you must still smile and be happy, because life goes on no matter what and does not ends at that moment."
I think many people cries and weeps when they watch a touching scene in dramas which include all the emotion outbursts and wise words being spoken, but believe me, if we were to really learn all the good values portrayed then we are already people who holds success in their fist. People always feel down and sad about their fate and encounters in life. When your friends don't want to mix with you you feel like dying. When you face some problems in studies you feel like giving up. But don't the dramas we watch every day (for some) tell us that life goes on no matter what? That the happiness of your life is based on how you view and live your life, not what you encounter? That we are supposed to see everything in a positive way so that we will feel encouraged in everything?
Some people say, life is a competition, not a game. For me, a competition can be a game, depending on your perspective. If you take each thing as a challenge which you complete for fun and try again and again if you were to fail, then you find life less stressed. If you take everything as a competition which you are supposed to be winning, then you find your life like hell. Some people says if you don't take things seriously then you won't be able to achieve good results, but the thing is can't we take games seriously? The biggest difference between games and competitions is one is for fun which the other stresses on victory, but I do not think that we should stress on victory in whatever tasks we are trying to complete. Taking something as a game means that you feel fun in doing it while only concentrates on how to become better without thinking of being the best among other people, it's actually better than competition because the real opponent in our life is always ourselves, not others. The ones who become the best are actually people who thinks of how to improve themselves everyday, not winning their opponents. It's just like two chess players, one always think of how to play better in chess while the other how to win his opponent, who do you think will be better in chess?
Life is a game which do not end unless you die, and if your are not dead you can still win this game. Winning our life's game is not becoming the best, but feeling happy. You can be at the peak of the world, but you can still feel lonely. So how do you become happy? The answer is, by thinking positively and want to be happy yourself! Some people lost everything, but they still feel happy. If you ask them why, they might tell you: "I have just lost everything, but it would be worse still if I were to lose my happiness and hope too" Life is about living, and living is about being happy! There can be no reason, yet if you want to switch you mood to happy, you will be able to do it. The same thing may make one person sad but the other happy clearly showing us that it's our mind that decide what kind of life we want to live!
It's true that we may be lost sometimes in life, and it's true that sometimes we feel disappointed. But whenever we are ready to live on and game on, hope will never leave us! When hope never leaves you, then so do happiness. So whatever happens, remember:
Live on! Game on!
Rule number 2: Total control
I have failed again and again in keeping my temper. As a result, sometimes actions which are not appropriate or words that do not suit the place and time pop out. Sometimes temper does not only mean anger, but also happiness, excitement and impatience.
To change is the best way. To start to change is the action that I must carry out. To be consistent is the attitude I must have to ensure my target is reached.
I have read and heard from many sources that the real control is not to force yourself to bear with unhappiness, but is not to feel unhappy at all however bad the condition may be. The real control is not only controlling yourself from doing things or saying words which will bring bad effects to the people around you when you are too happy, but not to reach the state of over-happy at all. The real control is not to refrain yourself from showing that you are impatient, but not to feel impatient at all.
The true control must be to able to wipe any feeling of giving up although you have failed in something and feel a bit down or disappointed. It must also enable you to pursue your target steadily, not with a heart burning too hot which may dominate your head, but also not with a heart so cold that it can't generate any energy at all. It gives you the ability to love, but at the same time does not cause you to have the wish to take for yourself.
To work on myself is the first step to be liked by others, to smile happily on your own face needs a happy heart. To develop the true good self is more important than a good image, to chase your dreams and love but do so with a pure heart.
So, I think I should start now. At this instant. I have dreams to chase, I have love to find, but if I keep fill my mind with the ugly thoughts, how do I be true and just when I am chasing my dreams and finding my love? And how I get true and meaningful success and sincere love?
I will think of good things, I will speak only good words (although I do like to tease for joke sometimes, so I think I just have to keep my joke behind the line so it does no offence). I will be true to myself, then only by doing so I will be able to find true love and happiness in life.

The feeling from the past
People often find that some places make them feel comfortable and some places uncomfortable. It is actually our physical side of our brain affecting us. But all the same, that's why one always like things that give them feeling about being home, about family. It's just the same for people you know.
Patriotic is actually born from this feeling. One is patriotic for one's country because you were born in it, you live in it and you love it. Now where does that love come from? Because your country gives you a feeling of comfort. You get used to your surroundings, you grow up in such a place, therefore you will have certain feelings for it. It gives you a feeling of comfortableness which you can't find a real reason.
Once I read a book that tells a story about a cook who is determined to make those who taste his food feel happy and contented. In his life, he conduct many experiments and researches before he found out the reason: Food that reminds someone of his happy memories will make one happy. A billionaire who used to catch fishes in sea with his father may love the taste of seaweed while a successful businessman who used to be a beggar may be touched by the taste of a steaming bowl of porridge with some slices of ginger.
In life, I have always encounter things which make me feel happy and contented, although I may only realize the reason after that. It happens when I saw little kids running around at mid autumn festival excitedly with their lanterns, or when members of a uniform team are marching round the marching court, students preparing their debate speech notes and many more. One may say that it is crucial to keep moving onward and never look back, but these pleasant memories of the past will always make you smile widely in your future.
Sometimes I feel happy with some people I barely know for several days and after that I will realize the way that person talks may be similar to someone I like or the type of people I used to mingle with. Sometimes I like some food so much although I just get to try it, and realize after that it's because it reminds me of some food I used to eat a lot when I was small. Sometimes when I see a place which resembles somewhere I miss I couldn't stop feeling happy. The feeling is so wonderful, that it can change your mood instantly although you may just encounter problems before.
I feel very grateful for these happy feelings from the past, which continue to cheer me up and give me courage to live. Although I am involved in new tasks, living in a new place and meeting new people everyday, I will always find some tasks, some places and some people that make me happy.
Don't be sad in life whatever you encounter, happiness may be just around you. =D

Dependency
A question asked at the grand new comers welcoming ceremony trigger me to write about this topic.
If you were to give someone things for his own good, please do not give him too much. There's a Chinese saying: Giving a person a fish can fill his tummy for the day, teaching him how to fish can fill his tummy for the rest of his life. The problem is, when you are trying to teach someone who is hungry how to fish a fish, you must also give him some fishes to eat to keep him alive. The trick is to find some way to let a person become able to fish himself before he is used to get free fishes from you, but the point is it's very hard to achieve that. Plus, how that person thinks himself is also a major varying variable. Some people begs for money although they have healthy body, while others work although they are handicapped.
During the ceremony, we were given a chance to interact with our nation's national secretary who work with prime minister. The seventh person to rise and ask question ask a very stupid question, or rather, show the world how low is his thoughts (I won't mention the person's gender and race here). The question asked: Are there any guarantee that job opportunities will be given to students who graduate from this university?
The national secretary ask that person a question before he give any answer.
" Do I owe you a living? "
Although I am not expecting or counting on the government to guarantee me a job or a life, but nevertheless a bell rang somewhere in my mind. Isn't this something that happen in our everyday life? Students who do not get good results blame their teacher, workers who do not get good salary blame their bosses, children who do get their favorite toys blame their parents. Even I blame other people sometimes. But thinking back, do anyone owe you anything?
Your boss owe you for the things you do for the company? Nah, even with you gone the company won't go bankrupt, if it do then your boss will surely treat you well. Your teacher have the responsibility to teach you well? Yes, I suppose a teacher do need to teach you well, but when you start to rely on teacher too much and can't put a little effort of your own you will just end up dying also, certainly not your teacher's fault.
No one owe you a living, that's how life is. When you are born from your mother's womb, she gave you life. You get a life, and how to live your life actually depends on you, not other people. Not realizing this will cause a person to depend on others and worse, think that it is right for other people to be there for you to be depended on. When we start depending on others in all kinds of stuffs, we actually get weaker and weaker. Eventually, we lose our true self, because what make you today depends on others, not yourself. Do you want a life where your existence is based on others only? In such a life where is yourself?
It's true that in many things we need to have some degree of dependency on others, like depending on your family to give you mental support. However, we should also always be prepared to face the worst and be independent when the situation needs us to become so. We need to realize that never needing or trying to be independent will certainly make us vulnerable to disaster and obstacles in future which we may have to face without depending on others around us.
Do I or anyone else owe you a living? Certainly not. Don't get used to dependency.

Leave an escape route
Many people would have heard this saying: Don't mess with people with nothing, because they could have done anything since they have nothing to lose. This saying tells us people who already lost almost everything or has nothing important at stake will have no doubt in doing something to change their depressed condition. Thinking of this saying, I remember this type of incident happen a lot in history and our daily lives.
I am not teaching you to make enemies, but in life one will face many competitions, either formal and informal. Facing people who threatens you in any aspect will be similar as facing your enemy, and need to be tackled strategically to reduce trouble or even better, to solve the conflict. The trick to choose the correct way is to choose the way that will reduce your damage received to minimum. For example, if you can win a fight without loosing anything but only cost your enemy a little bit damage, it is still advisable compared to destroying your enemy completely but sustaining heavy loss.
If you were to read "The Art Of War" by Sun Tzi, you will find a saying: When surrounding your enemy to attack them, leave a escape route for them. Do not surround them completely. Do you know why? Let's picture the situation to find the answer.
In this scenario, there's nowhere to run for the red gang. So the blue gang got them cornered properly. Now, who knows what will happen?
Naturally, because the red ones have no place to escape, their only choice is to fight. In this case, the red ones will most probably deal heavy damage to the blue ones although the blue ones will win in the end due to their greater number.
If there is an escape route, then the situation will differ greatly. The red ones will be concentrate on escaping as they realize that there's no chance of winning. So, the blue ones can enjoy an easy task finishing off those who can't escape in time, with the advantage of attacking from the back of enemies who are escaping and sustaining almost no loss. Maybe a few enemies will escape, but you still gain a huge victory with no casualties. What's more, you will also be more confident to face future battles since your army's strength is not reduced.
Sun Tzi said: In any fights, being able to stop one's enemy's attack by not sacrificing anything is the best strategy. Isn't that right? In life, not losing is also a part of winning. If you gain a lot after a heavy cost, then maybe it's hardly worth it.
So, remember to leave an escape route for your enemy when you already gain victory. It's not being sympathetic, it's to lose less, and to lose less means to have more. As shown above, allowing your enemy the chance to escape will prevent them from fighting back with all they have.
In modern society, maybe the competition you will be facing won't be resulting in death. But still, as a Chinese saying goes: Provide others with a chance to move down the stage without further embarrassment.
Although you have won, your opponent will still be grateful for your action, what's more is you may gain a friend to aid you in future.
So the next time you are sure to win already, leave an escape route for your enemy. =)

To share for nothing
One day, I ask myself a question: Why do we share the thing on our mind on social websites?
Before I get an satisfactory answer for myself, I found an interesting article on newspaper some day after the question pop into my mind. There was headlined by "Useless Generation"
It stated that our current generation is facing serious problem related with social websites. One of the problems it told me gave me a sharp blow on my head.
"People who uses social websites today tends to become more absorbed in imaginative wellness. They shared statuses to tell people every single thing they are doing, because they thinks that they got a lot of attraction that way (like a Hollywood star, I supposed, whom people demand to know every tiny, insignificant facts about them). They also posts "exotic" sentences and famous quotes, to show people their "high-class-ness" (or how well their "chim-glish" is). Click here to know more. These action act as a fuel for their self satisfaction, but sadly in a pathetic way.
It also warns that we human who depends heavily on social websites will pay a heavy price someday. Somehow, the article seems to answer my question that troubled me for quite some time.
Do we share for the benefits of others, or for our own imaginary satisfaction? Do we gain anything in reality, or gives any contribution to the society? Do we even follow the "meaningful" sentences we post for others to see? Do we create online groups that truly lead to a place where people share their mind peacefully, or allow people to vent their feelings in the form of rude and irresponsible words that may trigger distortion and war?
I am not saying that we cannot share words we find meaningful to inspire people around you as how it inspires you. I am not saying we cannot share jokes that may cheer up your friends. But before you post , before you share, please ask yourself the reason you want to share. If somewhere deep in your souls the reason "To let me feel good by getting people's 'LIKE' or '+1' is hidden, then stop, don't do it. The action's same, but because the intention is wrong it has no meaning at all.
To share for your friends is to wish they can find the information you share useful or cheering. To share to fuel your pride, one day you will wake up realizing it's all a stupid dream, and it's just the same as to share for nothing.

Nice for a reason
In life we may have many friends. And they treat you nicely (at least in some way you appreciate). I guess that's why (s)he is your friend anyway.
There is many reasons people are being nice to you. Do you ever think about that?
Human is a type of social animal. We seek attention and care. That's the general reason why we live in groups and make friends. Besides cooperating to survive anyway.
But what kind of thoughts people have in mind when they become your friend? Do they become your friend just to seek attention and care? Or do they choose you because they are comfortable with you?
They sound no difference, but the difference's huge.
Let's check again: They become your friend to seek attention and care.
And there's this one: They become your friend because they are comfortable with your attention and care.
The first type is present everywhere and is so common that most people would have got used to it already. They are people who make friends because they don't want to be lonely. Of course you may ask: Who wants to be lonely? My answer: No one, but not everyone become your friends JUST BECAUSE they don't want to be lonely. If that's the only reason they become your friend, then you just found some bunch of friends who can leave you anytime when they are not lonely without you and have to choose between you and some guy who can offer him more attention and care. In short, welcome to the world which its people vote for personal gain above other things.
Now don't worry, there's the second type of people. The ones who become your friends because they feel comfortable with you. If they feel comfortable with you, it means they like your personality. They don't become your friend for attention and care, but for the reason they think you are a good person. These type of friend may just stick around you joining you in some activities or sometimes just a chat, and they won't show too much enthusiasm compared to the type above in pestering you with all kinds of treats, because they don't really fear for your cold shoulder. They are just being themselves, that's all. Even if you guys got separated for a few days without any communication, the next time you meet, you will still be much the same. This is the true friend.
There is a Chinese saying that I wholeheartedly agree with:
Friendship between two sincere persons is as tasteless as a glass of clear water, yet free of dirt.
Friendship between two persons who thinks more for themselves is as sweet as honey, yet may hide poison.
Why? Because sincere people become friends because they like each other, not because they want to gain from each other. Therefore their relationship may be a bit dull, but their heart is always true and just. People who make friends to gain from each other may have a more colorful and fun relationship, because they enjoy gaining from each other. But in the end they may end up selling out each other when they want to gain more or blast the other out from the competition.
There's no free lunch, therefore people won't be so nice to you without a reason. Well, it's up to you to find out the reasons and be careful of flattery and treats.
Because there is always a reason for being nice.

Keep some money, for god's sake!
Bad habit. Bad, bad habit.
And it's not just bad. It can be terrible, horrible and merciless sometimes.
Since very very long time ago, human has learned to spare things. (Not "spare me please!" kind of spare)
This "spare things" can be easily achieved by storing extra things to be used in emergency or any other more demanding situation.
Why? As any ancient, undeveloped human may tell you, because life is unpredictable. Life may be sweet at some point, but cruel at some point. You may be lucky sometimes, but bad luck appears sometimes too. Life may be about how much you can get and how comfortable you get to live, yet in many conditions, it is about how you can survive.
But how come human, who becomes cleverer as the time pass, who develops new technology beyond their ancestors' dreams, does not learned from the past? Why there is still so many people who is unable to see the problem?
The bad habit who is making human suffering every single day: NOT TO KEEP
In old days when human is still using barter system (trading by changing belongings) in businesses, it is very hard to spare. Because there is too many things to keep. If you keep dried fish, then maybe you are unable to keep dried fruits. If you keep chickens, maybe you are unable to keep goats. Why? Because you cannot keep everything, limited by energy and human ability. Plus, the transport in these days is a no-no and you can't imagine to buy anything from a place far from yours, barter system or not.
Today?
There's only one thing you have to keep....money. (Except instant noodles and instant drinks, I guess)
There is many who still keep money, but there's also a lot of people who don't.
WHY?
There's two main reason.
One, they don't think that it is necessary to keep some money.
Two, they can't stop themselves from spending the money.
I don't list here the reason "They don't know anything about keeping money" because I think any ten years old would have know about it already.
For the people who don't think it is necessary to keep money, it's either their family is so rich that they have near unlimited resources, or they are optimistic to the point of foolishness. For the second type of people, they are used to be rich before but they still can't shake off the habit of spending like a rich person or they want to show off to their friends as they feel embarrassed to show that they do not have much money.
For any kind of people above, their ending may be disastrous. Having a good income or a rich family only reduces the risk you will face of becoming poor, but the risk's still there, while not being so rich but wanting to spend like you are so rich one may end up owing the whole world money and scrapping leftovers in the bin for dinner.
To avoid that, when you earn a lot, keep some. I don't mean living like a beggar while keeping all the money you can keep, but at least be reasonable and not wasteful in spending. Keep for yourself, keep for your family, keep for your future. It's a knowledge from the past which we should not forget.
Remember, choosing to keep may save your neck in the future.

So It's Tradition huh
In many occasions we are required to sent gifts, either in forms of money or other types of present. From the past it's tradition for Chinese to give red packets with money inside(angpau) to their young during Chinese new year to protect them from bad events (as believed by Chinese since before).
However, as the time and era pasts, what changed the most is our thoughts. Chinese may still give red packets to their own kids to wish them good luck, but when they give red packets to other's people kids it was more like giving because they should. If other people give your children red packets and you do not return his generosity by "wishing" his child children good luck (with red packets too, of course), then people will stare at you like you are some kind of horrible people, and rush to chat about how stingy and antisocial you are behind your back.
In the past when the technology and living condition is not so good, people are not immersed in television programs and internet or computer games. So they mingle around in their society and get well with their neighbors and friends. They also always give each other things they have too much or people need because they are friendly and helpful.
Today in our modern society, we still give people things sometimes, so the tradition is still being carried on. I guess while we can say it's good that the "appearance" of this good tradition that symbolizes helpfulness and friendliness continue, the bad thing here is the true meaning of the tradition has disappeared in most cases. In most cases today, people give things to people because they have too much and want to get rid of it,not sharing good things (although if you somehow know that the person need the thing the case is different). In other occasions where they give to congratulate, people just give money today (I because money is the most important thing in our life already) in the form of red packets, and the reason they give mostly is because of "peer pressure".
Personally, I think that while human evolve and become more "modern" today, we give in too much to make way for our materialistic luxuries, and things we have given up include our true feelings for each other. Maybe it's because we don't need to depend on each other to live anymore, but this transformation slowly turns us into the kind of people who live in our own world. Slowly we began to forget this world is supposed to be everyone's together, and together we should work to make it a better place.
That is why people nowadays may think tradition is a waste and there's no real meaning to us. They are not totally wrong having this kind of thoughts. It's the era and the mind of people that changed, and although we appeared to be carrying on our ancestors' tradition in the exact way, we missed the most important thing: the spirit of the tradition. And with the spirit long gone, we are just people doing things named "tradition" like robots doing their chores, and it's anything but meaningful.
So it's tradition huh? Big deal!
If you hear your kids telling you that, it's not your kids' fault. It's your fault for not keeping the spirit alive in them.

Rules for me, by me: Rule One
When I was at my working place, an idea suddenly sprang into my mind. I realize that in this world there's a lot of principles one has to follow in order achieve our desired success. But, the main thing is one always forget or ignore these principles somehow, although we know exactly that's the thing we should not have done. Well, so i reckoned i will put it down in words so I can always remind myself or get reminded by others (please do so, haha).
First of all, I have to stop one bad habit of mine: spending too much unnecessary money on drinks. When I was studying in matriculation level, I was living away from family and for the first time, using my pocket money with no one to control me or boss me about. Then, I realize that although I did not spend so much on food (still a very considerable amount since my appetite is huge), my pocket money seems to disappear at a faster rate than it should be. Why? well, I noticed that I spent a lot on drinks, which I could have saved a lot of money. Let's say I bought drinks for every lunch and dinner there, and each drinks costs averagely one ringgit, so in one month alone I will spend extra 60 ringgits! Plus, because I am a soy milk lover, I also buy soy milk to drink regularly, causing the extra money spent rise to nearly a hundred ringgit!
Wow, a hundred a month, in a year it will be one thousand and two hundred ringgits! Oh my gosh, I waste one thousand two hundred ringgit on my drinks alone when I completed my one year matriculation course! If I were to continue spending this much on my drinks I will be spending twelve thousand ringgits on drink in ten years, which is a very big amount already!
So, back to the present, I think I should stop this kind of money wastage before it's too late. Of course, for such a soy milk lover to cut out drinking soy milk for the rest of my life is unbearable. That's why I decide to limit my expenses on drinks to five ringgits a week, which allows me some spare bucks to grab a can or two of soy milk, which is the most delicious drink on earth for me! The best thing is, I can reduce my money spent on drinks by 80%, thus greatly increases my savings.
Sitting in a restaurant yesterday, a friend of mine asked me: "How you are going to eat without drinking? It will make your throat feel dry." Well, I still find the idea of drinking later from the bottle I brought along after I leave the restaurant better compared to wasting twelve thousand ringgits in ten years.
Well, I do think I am allowed to spend a bit more on drinks after I have saved quite an amount of money (at least five hundred thousand!). But for now I am just a boy who still get his pocket money from his parents and don't have the ability to feed myself. So it's just fair and more reasonable to spend less on things I don't really need (although soy milk is essential for me, at least mentally) and to spare some money for emergency.
Recently, the restaurant workers in the restaurant I always go to have my lunch have learned not to ask what drink I want (because it will be a waste of time, energy and saliva XD).
PS:
(It's OK if you think this idea is funny or I am too stingy, *shrug* because when one is short of twelve thousand ringgits some other time then only (s)he will know how much this small wasted expenses over the years will cost him(her). I have seen many people striving hard to survive when their business faces problems, yet they are capable of earning loads in the past.)

From Bedtime Stories to Reading
When i was small, my mum used to read me bedtime stories before I sleep. Just like any other normal kids, I was totally fascinated by the stories about kings and princes, robbers and armies as well as magicians and witches. I still vividly remember myself begging my mum to tell more stories before sleeping, and my mum would say: "Hush dear, let's leave it for tomorrow." followed by a sweet smile.
When I grow older, I read story books with pictures and comics. But because I was deeply attracted by stories they appeared to me that the stories they hold are not satisfying enough. But since I was still small, for me the novels that appeared to hold a lot of words and thick are quite intimidating. It was till I completed my standard three education that I try to read a novel in the holidays under my mum's encouragement. I still remember the book titled: Nobel's life. To my astonishment, I was so absorbed by the book that I can't put it down before i finish it. From just a novel I can get a sight into Nobel's life and the story about how he fights against obstacles in his life before achieving great success that will benefit mankind forever.
Since that day, it was like a whole new world is exposed to me. I learned not to fear books that seems thick or articles with words I can't understand. One thing can be sure when you see such articles is there is new things to be learned, and nothing to fear. For hard words, you can find their meaning in dictionary. What really valuable that we can gain is a new way to think, sometimes an idea that can change your life and perspective, driving you in a whole different direction in your life. And what's more, you get to accumulate every perspective people can possibly have because you can read them off articles or books, thus, granting you the chance to compare and think critically based on the various facts and opinions laid in front of you.
People who read are the people who learn, and only those who are learned can change and innovate. A world's change may start from a single country evolving, and a single country's improvement starts from its people's knowledge and decision, while knowledge and the confidence to decide comes from reading.
"The world is flat" as the title of a book written by Thomas Friedman told us. The main reason of this phenomenon is due to the extensive communication applications used by mankind nowadays. Thanks to that, now we can read anything we want through internet and books are easier to reach every corners of the world. Blessed with these advantages, people who does make full use of the power of communication to extend their reading scope will be painfully limited and falls out of competition.
Sadly, although Malaysia is an evolving country, the reading amount by our citizens are still far behind other countries. Many of our people are still unaware of things happening around the globe that might give us lessons and valuable knowledge. For such people, how can they innovate and improve themselves, let alone helping in our nation's development?
It's true many people nowadays may not share my experience: being told bedtime stories that has drawn me towards the world of reading, but it is necessary to open their eyes wide and open their ears to the happenings around us. We as intelligent humans, must follow the tide of change and innovations or get left behind in the outdated thinking and era.
And most importantly, we will also need to educate our young about what powerful ability reading can provide us. If our young generations read, then they learn. When they learn, they change to become better.
Well, maybe parents should spend some time reading bedtime stories to their kids. =)

Oh Totally Coffee
Well, actually i am not a coffee lover. Personally, I only take some coffee occasionally when i really need an energy boost. I am writing this because one of my best friends is totally into coffee drinking, and I just sort of check out some facts of coffee and write here, so it's not wrong to say this passage is dedicated to that person.
For that person, if you are reading this, HAHAHA!!!
Never mind, we skipped that part first. I believe as a student studying for SPM or higher level exams will surely have some experience like this: Exam is near and i need to study late, oh my gosh I am so sleepy, so I take a cup of coffee; or Today's the big day and i really need to focus! But i felt a bit tired so i take a cup of coffee to wake my brain up. Sounds familiar?
Well, if that situation seems to occur more for you, then I can safely assume you are a frequent drinker. We have heard from many people that coffee brings what benefit or what bad effects, but I think we should use some times to judge which option is the best. So, here we are, let's start on some facts.
For pros, the long terms effects are:
1, Prevents cancer as coffee is a good source of antioxidant
2, Prevents Parkinson disease and Alzheimer's disease
3, Prevents liver cirrhosis
4, Reduces the risk of getting diabetics
Short terms effect (and the one reason student really think of when they drink coffee =P)
1, Temporary mental boost
For cons, long terms effects are:
1, Have higher chance to get osteoporosis
2, Have higher chance to get heart diseases
3, Dependency on caffeine
Short terms effect:
1: Alter the normal cycle of life ( time to sleep, eat, etc)
There's one thing need mentioning though. Of all the long terms effect stated there, the fastest to happen(depend on condition) is the dependency on caffeine. You won't get to reduce Alzheimer's diseases faster than you get addicted to caffeine. Luckily, caffeine is graded as a drug which is easier to recover from. It means if you do it take it too often, it won't have any effects. The problem of addiction usually has three main sources:
1, Love the taste of coffee, normally drink just for the taste
2, Take coffee whenever you think you need energy
3, develop a cycle where: drink coffee to stay up late at some time, life cycle gets affected, drink more when you feel tired at other time(actually is due to the first staying up)
If you find yourself one of these three, then you are quite vulnerable to coffee addiction, or to use more specific terms, caffeine dependency. The side effects includes having the need to take coffee at frequent intervals to avoid dizziness, headache and tiredness that appear without obvious reason. When you are in such condition, then it is a warning to you that you better start controlling your coffee intake.
There are some recommended steps:
1, Find some healthy activities and force yourself to do it to distract your mind from caffeine craving
2, Find some other healthy drinks to replace coffee, like soy milk drink, and tell yourself you don't need coffee with the presence of your new favorite drink!
3, Get used to not consuming caffeine by consuming decaffeinated coffee instead.
Good luck and hope you all can enjoy coffee as its friend and avoid the bad effects. =)

Still Littering In Our Supposed "Modern" Country
Littering.
I can safely assume that many people in this country grow up seeing a lot of littering done around them. Sometimes one can see rubbish get thrown out of private cars or public buses, from the top floor of a flat, from their house area over the fence....well, quite some varieties there. In fact, some people see so much littering done that they start to develop some thoughts like: "Well, if everyone's throwing rubbish that way then I can do that also isn't it?" or "It I do not litter, others still do, so what difference there will be? We may as well choose the easier way!"
If one were to ask people who litter why do they litter, I guess they can give you a hundred excuses, and some extremely funny ones you will get too, like this two: "The rubbish bin is no where to be seen.(Just a few feet from him, actually)" and "I am just following the public preference, aren't I?"
Even funnier, most people seemed to think that if a town is dirty and "rubbish-visible" at most places, the town council is mainly to be blamed. It's quite amusing that many people seemed to think that the main responsibility for city hygiene lies on town council and they should remove the rubbish in the town no matter how they achieve it, like sending more workers to sweep the rubbish or putting more rubbish bin or having more rubbish truck running around town collecting rubbish...well, nothing to do with themselves.
I supposed our town councils do have space for improvement, but i do not think they are the main cause in this problem. The real solution that will solve this problem is to educate our citizens not to throw rubbish anywhere at their leisure. It is clear that we have to admit sadly that our citizens may live in a city, but many of them have the awareness of environment hygiene as much as a three years old. Young and old people alike, are used to throwing rubbish at the moment they want as it is easier.
Although our schools have been telling students not to litter, our education seemed to fail as it's common knowledge that our education system mainly focuses on theory rather than practical even in moral education. In fact, I believe everyone who ever went to school recently will know students merely pose and take photographs for the moral projects, to give "proof" that they are involved in all sorts of "morally correct" activities which their teachers accept without question.
To achieve a modern mind on this particular among the citizens, drastic moves have to be taken by the government to regulate their actions and plant the seed of the modern thinking in their minds. These steps need to focus on "Punishment and Award" as well as "Direct Involvement". By punishing citizens who litter does not mean simply setting the law, but forming a special group in the police that makes sure that people who litters are actually caught and punished. Of course, this will work better if the lawbreakers were to sweep the city and help clear away rubbish they are so adapt at "producing". Rewarding groups or individuals who volunteers to keep the city clean will also encourage such activities. The cleanest village can also be rewarded to show the government's appreciation for their effort. The planting of the seed of modern thinking involves the direct interaction of officers in charge with locals and group cleaning activities with them(they are required to participate).
If our city is kept clean and tidy, our nation's image will be held higher as a really modern country in both technology and citizens' minds. Those who usually litters may also have a bit more hygiene conscious after seeing how nice it is to have a clean city.
But of course, it's up to the politicians to be aware of what they should do isn't it? I do not think anyone here could have overlook this problem, or maybe they are busying retorting critics at each other? Well, if the people were to stand up and speak, I fear another problem will arise, similar to an incident not long ago.... Shh... I am not supposed to say this.
Well, let's just pray that the problem of littering gets overcame soon.

Should I use the "supposed" way?
I had heard from one of my colleagues some tips to handle particularly ego boss or older relatives. He told me that the best way to achieve good relationship and make them like you is to nod and approve whenever they lecture or tell you which way is the best way. Of course, he added, if he or she teach you the wrong way or give you pointless advice (it's up to you to tell whether it is pointless or not), you are quite free to follow the right way (the right way according to you, if you are sure) when that particular person is not poking his nose around. Most funnily is the example he told me: "If your boss tell you that the letter 'B' is read as 'A', just read as 'A' in front of him and resume reading 'B' behind his back."
Well, after several months' working in a secondhand car shop, i perfectly understand the effectiveness of the way he taught me. In fact, it is so effective that the results i get after trying it out is almost shocking. Through my observations, i realized that this type of people normally enjoys having a certain degree of domination over other people, and the people they have the best chance and excuse to dominate is their junior or their employees. They are mostly confident about their own plans and strategies, that they do not allow other people to contradict them, whether they are correct or wrong. They also tend to blame something on others so that they appear to be not responsible for something wrong.
Although we can assume this type of people will have a lower chance of succeeding in their career and become the leader, some did succeed. Some of them are humble and clever. By learning fast and working hard, they may rise to the top without trouble. The problem is, once they think their position is high enough already or they are the "pros" then this type of personality will, most unfortunately, appear and cause the "lower rank people" around him to suffer.
Well, the trick to handle them is to let them win. How? Whenever you are accused, always say sorry and oh-i-will-never-do-that-again type of things. Then, rush off to solve(or make it look like) the problem and report to him afterwards. Of course if it is actually not your fault at all after u solve or fail to solve that problem, give him hints in your report(verbally or on paper) that it is actually not your fault. Mostly, this type of people will keep quiet and won't mention that problem anymore(although they also will not take back their word that's it's your fault, mostly anyway) but will find a way to "pay back" your good deed of of rushing to solve problem without thinking of defending yourself first and of course, keeping their face on their face. So, you are more likely to be promoted and have a "immunity card "even if you do make some mistakes.
Handy isn't it? So this should be the "supposed" way when it comes to tackle such type of people. Of course if he or she is just some people who are not superior than you you can just simply ignore and keep your distance, no need to bother standing them as you do for your boss or seniors.
A relative( let's call him Mr C) of mine is exactly of the type above. The problem is, he is also quite close to me, in fact, more than just a relative to me. Sadly, when he try to teach me or rather, "control" me for my own good, he always put me in misery. I know he is right in many things, but when he is wrong sometimes he just couldn't listen to sense. In other words, he can't accept that he is wrong in any way.
But should i use the "supposed" way when dealing with him? I know that it will make him happy and perhaps like me more, but I am sad to see him cheating himself whenever he do something wrong. I hope I can discuss with him about what's wrong and what's right in a harmony atmosphere rather than breaking into a shouting match every time we tried to discuss. I do not wish to treat him like some type of task that i handle mechanically, just to obtain his preference and treats. I hate just simply nodding when he lecture me with pointless advice and ignoring it just the same. It makes me feel so far away from him, even further than shouting at each other, because at least we are telling each other the thing we have in our minds.....
Maybe i should just use the supposed way to simplify matters: to improve our relationship as there won't be any quarreling after using it. But if I were to use that particular way, won't our relationship become more distant even though we don't quarrel? He will only get to see the faked ME I act in front of him, telling him nothing of my opinions, my thoughts, my dreams......
